THE DEPARTMENT OF LEARNING SUPPORT

The Department of Learning Support unit is a student's ticket to a professional career of his/her choice. The department  is intended to serve students who are not prepared for certain Core Curriculum courses and who may need to strengthen their English, math or reading skills.

Students scoring below a combined score of 830 on the SAT or below 430 on the verbal or 400 on the math are required to take the COMPASS Test in an attempt to exempt Learning Support courses. Students scoring below 17 on the English or math portion of the ACT are also required to take the COMPASS Test for the same reason.

Upon entering Albany State University, students may enroll in only two Learning Support courses and must have  minimum scores of  32 for English, 20 for math or 62 for reading. In order to exit from Learning Support,  the following scores on the COMPASS Test must be made:  37 in math, 60 in English and 74 in reading.

For English and reading, there is one course: English 0099 and  Reading 0099. All students scoring from 32 to 59 must enroll in English 0099.  Those  scoring between 62 and 73  will enroll in Reading 0099.

Two math courses are offered: Math 0097 and Math  0099. A student can only exit math from the 0099 course except in special situations. Students scoring 20 to 29 are required to enroll in 0097 and those scoring from 30 to 36 are required to enroll in 0099 math.
