            CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
          
        
        
          The Visual Communication Certificate is structured to provide basic skills for immediate
        
        
          employment in the photography field.  The Visual Communication Certificate requires a
        
        
          completion of 18 hours of study (six courses of 3 hours each).  This certificate is offered
        
        
          online.
        
        
          
            PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTFOLIO
          
        
        
          Students wishing to be admitted to the online Visual Communication Certificate Online
        
        
          program must first submit to the Art Department a satisfactory portfolio of images that
        
        
          demonstrates fundamental photographic skills.  Students who do not wish to submit a
        
        
          photographic portfolio must take and pass ART 2111 (Basic Photography), which is offered
        
        
          only on campus.  The portfolio must include the following items.  The portfolio must include
        
        
          the following items. Please submit the images in .jpg format (approximately 500 pixels x
        
        
          700 pixels x 180 ppi dimensions).

          Landscape image illustrating full depth of field (5 images)
        
        
          •
        
        
          Portrait image illustrating narrow depth of field (5 images)
        
        
          •
        
        
          Self portrait using one light source (5 images)
        
        
          •
        
        
          Cityscape image taken at night illustrating use of available light (5 images)
        
        
          •
        
        
          Studio portraits of a model or models using a “butterfly” or “Rembrandt” lighting
        
        
          set-up. Images should be a mix of formal portrait (5 images), environmental
        
        
          portrait (5 images), fashion/glamour (5 images), and a commercial product (5
        
        
          images).
        
        
          •
        
        
          Your photography portfolio must contain a minimum of 40 images presented in a
        
        
          portfolio format.  Please include any pertinent information.
        
        
          
            Equipment Required for Visual Design Certificate Online
          
        
        
          •
        
        
          Digital SLR camera with interchangeable lens (lenses with the following focal
        
        
          lengths are recommended:  35mm for wide angle shots, 80mm and/or 135mm for
        
        
          portraits, 200mm lens for telephoto shots. Zoom lenses are acceptable.  A lens
        
        
          with macro function is helpful).

          Strobe and/or hot light sources are necessary for studio and fill lights.  A
        
        
          dedicated flash strobe that matches your camera is a necessity.
        
        
          •
        
        
          Camera tripod.
        
        
          •
        
        
          A computer with Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Elements, or other computer image
        
        
          editing digital software.
        
        
          •
        
        
          (Since you are required to take Computer Art, Adobe CS 5 or newer will fulfill
        
        
          your computer software requirements).
        
        
          •
        
        
          A digital photography textbook is required.
