First Time Students

Freshman Residency Requirement

Albany State University requires that any freshman, single student whose native home address is outside of a 50 mile radius from Albany State University and is enrolled for twelve (12) or more semester credit hours, reside in the University residence halls and participate in a meal board plan. This requirement excludes summer sessions and is applicable until the attainment of sophomore academic standing (30 earned hours), or the approval of an exemption from the Housing and Residence Life Office.  Albany State University reserves the right to forgive the Freshman Residency Requirement when levels of occupancy have surpassed our legal capacity for housing residents.

Freshman students may request an exemption to the residency requirement by submitting a written explanation for the request to be released, along with the Freshman Release Request to Commute Form, located on the Housing and Residence Life webpage, under forms. All necessary paperwork must be submitted by June 15 (Fall Semester) or November 15 (Spring Semester) for consideration. Release for Spring semester will only be accepted from new students admitted for spring semester. No release request will be accepted after the official submission dates, unless critical circumstances apply.
