B.A. in Psychology
Welcome to the Psychology program at Albany State University! The Psychology program is a unit of the Department of Sociology and Psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Psychology is a broad discipline that studies human and animal behavior. Also, this field uses the scientific method in its basic and applied research to explore such behavior. As a Psychology major you learn many concepts such as learning, memory, perception, cognition, attention, emotion, motivation and interpersonal relationships. In addition, you receive instruction from highly qualified faculty on a number of special topics such as industrial psychology, family dynamics and psychopharmacology.
The Psychology program at Albany State University is committed to providing high quality education in a strong and collaborative environment by enhancing knowledge through scholarship, research and excellent teacher service. It is our goal to prepare students for a wide variety of post-baccalaureate alternatives by encouraging students to be active, engaged and participatory learners with the ability to think critically and apply their skills in academic, applied and real world settings.
In the short-term, one of the Psychology program’s goals is to have a tradition of conducting ground-breaking research that impacts our community, region and nation. So far we are on our way! With a newly created Social Sciences Research Lab, students are conducting original research with their mentors; learning all aspects of the research process. These efforts have led to students being invited to give talks and presentations at symposia and conferences across the United States. In addition, these presentations have resulted in competitive research awards and in some cases admission and full scholarships to graduate schools.
In addition to exciting course work and research, students majoring in Psychology may join two organizations in the program. They are the Psychology Club and PSI CHI, the National Honor Society in Psychology. The Psychology Club is open to all Psychology majors. The purpose of this club is for students to provide academic and social support to each other, share resources involving internship, graduate school and scholarship opportunities, and host campus activities. PSI CHI, the National Honor Society in Psychology is open only to Psychology majors with a GPA of 3.3. PSI CHI offers lifetime membership and its purpose is to encourage, stimulate, and maintain excellence in scholarship of its members, as well as to advance the field of Psychology. Students are encouraged to join both organizations.

Albany State University also offers an Associate of Science in Core Curriculum Guided Pathway to a Baccalaureate Degree in Psychology. The required classes are offered in face-to-face format, or online. Students may enroll in day classes, evening classes, or online classes to meet their individual scheduling needs. The A.S. is available completely online for students at a distance, or for local students who prefer the convenience of online classes.
What can I do with it?
Consider a Bachelor's Degree: The A.S. degree in psychology is considered to be a transfer degree. This degree is equivalent to the first two years of a bachelor's degree, and after completing their A.S. at Albany, students usually finish their bachelor's degree here at the university or transfer to a four-year college or university to finish a bachelor's degree in psychology. With a B.S. or a B.A. degree, graduates may find employment in business settings that do not require specialized psychological training. For teaching, research, specialized business pursuits, or counseling the minimum requirement is generally a master's degree in psychology.
