The College of Business, Education and Professional Studies

Message from the Dean

Peter Ngwafu, Ph.D.

Welcome to the website for Albany State University’s College of Business, Education, & Professional Studies! The college offers a cadre of programs, designed to prepare students to begin their professional careers. Our students complete a rigorous, yet engaging set of courses, and each major contains a requirement for experiential learning as well.

The College houses programs in Business, Criminal Justice, Education, Public Administration, Social Work and Military Science. Please be sure to visit the pages for each area so you can explore the many majors and concentrations within each of these programs.

The university’s theme is “Excellence is the Standard” and excellence is the benchmark we use in everything we do.  From the administrators that provide direction; to our staff that support; to faculty that teach and research; the design of our programs; to the content of the courses; to the delivery to our students; to the measures of accomplishments of our students; and to service we provide to our communities and alumni: all the responsibilities are performed seeking the highest level of excellence possible.  You will find that the faculty and staff in the College of Professional Studies are truly student-focused. We work closely with students to help them identify their goals (personal and career) and then provide them with a rigorous course of study to develop the professional skill set they will need to reach those goals and objectives.

The faculty delivers content to our students face-to-face and on-line, seeking to reach students where they are and in formats that suit their needs. In addition, we seek to instill a professional attitude in students in their demeanor, appearance and relationships with others. We also understand the benefit of attaining a combination of theoretical and practical experience. Therefore, our classroom activities are complemented with lectures and activities with working professionals; class assignments and projects that involve them with area businesses, agencies and schools; and internships/practicum/student teaching for all our students. Gaining insights into the working world prior to receiving their degree makes our students more marketable once they graduate, and they learn to apply what they have learned in the classroom.

We are constantly in touch with working professionals who keep us abreast of the current developments and needs of the professional world. Their input gives us advice that keeps our delivery to our students on the cutting edge. They are also able to provide to us feedback about how well our students are performing compared to other students so we are assured our students are competitive.

Finally, we are proud of the fact that, in addition to the university’s accreditation by SACSCOC, most of our programs are also accredited by program accrediting agencies. The Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE), the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA) have individually accredited our programs. This means each of our programs must meet the standards of these accrediting agencies to become accredited. A periodic review process assures we maintain these standards and continuously improve our programs.

We invite you to explore our webpages. Meet our faculty, staff, students and supporters. Learn more about our programs. Read about some of the exciting things we are doing and the recognition we receive from our efforts. Join us as your first school of choice.

Best wishes from the Dean, Faculty, and Staff.
