Student-Athlete Spotlight: Kendale Johnson
Meet Kendale Johnson, a dynamic junior at Albany State University (ASU) majoring in Business Management. Hailing from Denver, Colorado, Kendale is not just excelling in the classroom, maintaining a solid 3.0 GPA, but also making waves on the court as a standout player for the ASU men's basketball team. Recently named Men’s Basketball Newcomer of the Week by the SIAC, Kendale is the perfect example of hard work, dedication, and versatility in both academics and athletics.
What was it about ASU that drew you in and made it the perfect fit for you?
I’m really enjoying the vibrant campus culture and the chance to have a true college
experience while working towards my degree. Plus, the basketball atmosphere here is
unmatched!
What inspired you to participate in your sport, and how has your passion evolved over
time?
Basketball has been a love of mine since I was a kid, but it wasn’t until middle school
that it truly turned into my passion and drive. That’s when I knew the real work had
to begin, and from that point on, I’ve pushed myself harder every day to achieve the
dreams that I have.
Can you share a memorable moment in your athletic career that made you feel truly
proud?
The time that I won Freshman of the Year, Sophomore of the Year, and being named as
one of the nominees for Gatorade Player of the Year.
Balancing academics and athletics can be challenging. How do you manage your time
between practice, games, schoolwork and your hobbies?
For me, basketball comes naturally, but school is where the real challenge lies. To
stay on top of both, I prioritize my responsibilities by getting my work done before
I have fun or go out. I always plan ahead to ensure I tackle the important tasks first.
How has your team and/or coach impacted your growth as both an athlete and an individual? My coach holds me accountable just like the rest of my teammates, and they are always there to offer support when I need it just like my professors at Albany State! It’s a big team and I am thankful for the safe space they have created where I can grow, ask questions, and address any concerns I have.
How do you stay motivated during tough times or when facing obstacles in your sport,
academics, or everyday life?
I pray and trust that God wouldn’t give me anything I couldn’t handle. My faith keeps
me grounded and helps me stay focused through any challenges that come my way.
What advice would you give to other student-athletes that are looking to attend ASU? Make sure you're prepared to put in the hard work, both on and off the court, and it will pay off in the end!
