Histologic Technician

Program Overview

Do you find the television program CSI: Crime Stories interesting? Are you committed to participating in the development of new therapies for patients in need? Has a diagnosis of cancer ever affected you or someone you know? Then the field of Histotechnology may be the right choice for you.

Becoming a Histotechnician (HT) allows an individual to participate in patients’ lives without patient interaction. As a certified laboratory professional an HT prepares human and veterinary tissue samples for microscopic diagnosis by a doctor. This career will not only change your life but the lives of many others.

Online (Hybrid) Option

This option is for students seeking to get certified in the field of Histotechnology without attending classes on campus. Students participating in this program must have a clinical affiliate to fulfill the laboratory/clinical components required for graduation. The affiliate can be a current affiliate or one which is willing to participate as an affiliate of the Darton College Histotechnology program. The classroom portion is completed online with course content, quizzes, chats offered via the web.

 BEFORE YOU APPLY: PROGRAM NOTES

Prospective applicants should be aware of the following:

  • The courses to be completed for the degree will vary based on the student’s preferred area of study which is referred to as the “pathway” for the career program of choice. Therefore, it is important to meet with an adviser to map out the best academic plan to achieve his or her goal. The student should first focus on taking the prerequisites required for the program for which they will be applying.
  • All career programs have a selective admissions process. This means that a seat in any program is awarded only to the top applicants. Simply meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to a program.
  • The general education courses required for each career program are summarized in the comparison chart for all 2-year health career programs at Albany State University on the last page of the packet.
