Summer/Fall 2026 Registration Guide
New Student Registration Information & Guide
Advisors will work with students to:
- develop plans of study with clear pathways to achieve academic goals
- facilitate connections with faculty and academic support services
- facilitate connections with university resources including accessibility services, career services, and student affairs’ organizations
- provide workshops and individual and group training sessions covering a range of topics to ensure a successful academic and social transition to university life
While every advising relationship is unique, there are common goals and responsibilities that guide the process.
Goals of Advising at Albany State
Advisors at ASU work to:
- Help students clarify their values, goals, and strengths.
- Support students in understanding the purpose of higher education and how it connects to their future.
- Provide clear and accurate information about programs, requirements, policies, and opportunities at ASU.
- Guide students in planning an educational path that matches their interests and abilities.
- Monitor student progress and provide feedback to keep them on track toward graduation.
- Connect students with campus resources that support their academic, career, and personal growth.
How Advisors Support Students
To achieve these goals, advisors at ASU:
- Make sure students understand academic requirements, university policies, and support services.
- Help students reflect on their past achievements and how those experiences shape future goals.
- Use tools like test results, GPA, and other data to help students recognize their abilities and areas for growth.
- Work with students to create a term-by-term course plan and a clear path to graduation.
- Provide support and solutions when students face academic challenges.
- Connect students to tutoring, career services, counseling, and other campus resources.

Incoming Freshman
Incoming Freshman are not scheduled to meet with an advisor when scheduling for their first term.
During our gold carpet orientations, you’ll have a chance to sit one-on-one with an advisor and review your schedule and make any needed adjustments.
One you are admitted, you will receive a link to the New Rams Checklist.
Follow the steps on this checklist.
Once you complete steps 1-4 (and after April 1st), this triggers the advising email with the Schedule Preference Form
Complete the form with your schedule preferences. A schedule will be made for you based on these preferences and sent to your student email.
Processing Time for Forms: 2 weeks (Processing does not begin until April 1st)
Both the form and your schedule will go to your student email account!
Students are responsible for knowing their schedule and degree requirements. All students should review the Academic Catalog and their schedule before the term begins. Advisors will assist with finding this information during orientation.
Incoming Transfers
Once you have been accepted - you are responsible for submitting all transcripts from every institution you have attended.
Note: If you are currently enrolled somewhere, you must submit a transcript now and when final grades are posted.
Please allow 7 business days after transcripts are marked received to be processed and articulated.
Once you have submitted all transcripts, they will be reviewed and articulated by our transfer team. This process takes 7 business days after the last transcript was received. Updates will come to your student email.

Once your transcripts have been articulated, you will reach out to advising at 229-500-2002 to set up an appointment with our transfer advisor where you will select and register for classes.
- Freshmen are scheduled based on major, preferences, and availability. Special block schedules are reserved for freshmen.
- Advising cannot process your form if you have active holds. The only hold you should have is the Academic Advising Hold.
- You can submit documents for active holds here: Admissions Secure Document Submission
- Calling, skipping steps, or booking outside the process will not speed things up. Please follow the process for fair and accurate scheduling.
- Orientation is required. Choose your date early. We recommend Gold Carpet sessions for 1:1 advising; Saturday sessions do not offer individual advising conversations
- Confirm your major before registering. Your schedule is created based on the major listed on your admissions application. If you change your major afterward, your schedule may no longer be accurate.
- Students are responsible for knowing their schedule and degree requirements. All students should review the Academic Catalog and their schedule before the term begins. Advisors will assist with finding this information during orientation.

15-to-finish |
15 to Finish is a plan that encourages students to take 15 credit hours each semester. Doing so helps students stay on track, keep momentum, and complete their degree requirements without falling behind. |
AARC |
Academic Advising & Retention Center, or shortened as Advising center. The AARC is the home base for your staff advisors. Our location is on West campus in the Student Center by RamCentral in room 103. We do not have staff advisors on the East campus. |
Academic Calendar |
The academic calendar includes important dates for the academic year. Students are responsible for knowing and adhering to dates/deadlines posted on the academic calendar. Current and coming terms calendars are posted here. |
Academic Standing |
Academic Standing is determined by grades at the end of each semester. A student can view their current academic standing by logging into Banner Web. Academic Terms |
Full Term – 16 week ASU course (full semester) A-Term – 8 week ASU course during first half of semester B-Term – 8 week ASU course during last half of semester eCore/eMajor 16-week term – 16 week eCore or eMajor course (full semester, may have different start/end dates than ASU full term) 8-week term Session 1 - 8 week eCore or eMajor eCore or eMajor course during first half of semester 8-week term Session 2 *eMajor & eCore may have different start/end dates than ASU. Academic Year |
The period beginning on the first day of the fall semester and ending the day before the first day of the next fall semester. |
Advising Hold |
Each student at ASU has an Academic Advising hold on their account that is not removed, even after speaking with an advisor. All registrations and schedule changes must be made through an Advisor. The advising hold does not restrict you from accessing any part of your account or classes (grades, tuition bill, transcripts, assignments, etc.), it only restricts the act of registering for your classes without an advisor. |
Add/Drop |
This is the first few days of the semester. Dates are posted on the academic calendar and will be adhered to. After the last day of add/drop, no schedule adjustments can be made to allow for processing to begin for the registrar’s office and financial aid. At this point, you should be a week into your class and learning. |
Articulation |
Articulation is the process of bringing over your previous college work for credit at ASU. This includes transfer work, AP Credits, CLEP tests, etc. |
Associates Degree |
Degree option for students who are preparing to move into a bachelor’s degree program within a specific major. About 2/3 of the content is Core IMPACTS requirements with the remaining hours geared toward the students field of study. This is typically completed in 2 years with 15-to-finish academic progression. |
Bachelor’s Degree |
A bachelor’s degree is a college degree you earn by completing a set of required classes in a chosen area of study. It shows that you have gained knowledge and skills in that subject and met the college’s academic requirements. This is typically completed in 4 years with the 15-to-finish academic progression. |
Career Associate Degree |
Career Associate Degrees are offered through the Darton College of Health Professions and are designed to prepare students for workforce entry into their chosen career upon graduation. |
Classification |
<30 hours passed – Freshman 30-59 hours passed – Sophomore 60-89 hours passed – Junior 90+ hours passed - Senior |
Co-requisite |
A course which must be taken with another course. Learning communities are examples of two or more courses in which students must co-enroll so they are taken together with the same group of students. Other co-requisite courses might include a support class with a composition class or a support course with a math course, such as MATH 0999 and MATH 1111. |
Drop a Class |
You can only drop a class prior to the last day of add/drop. Once this concludes, you are not able to drop. |
FERPA |
Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) in compliance with the Federal Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), prohibits the University from providing certain information from your student records, such as information on registration, grades, billing, tuition and fees assessments, financial aid (including scholarships, grants, work-study, or loan amounts) and other student record information to a third party. This restriction applies, but is not limited, to parents, spouses, or sponsors. Students may grant the University permission to release information about your student records to a third party |
Full-Time Student |
A student enrolled for 12 or more credit hours in a semester. |
GaView (Georgia View) |
A course management system where ASU courses are housed. |
GoView (Go View) |
A course management system where eCore/eMajor courses are housed. |
GPA |
Abbreviation for Grade Point Average. GPA is calculated based on all grades earned at the university. |
Part-Time Student |
A student enrolled in less than 12 credits in a semester. |
Prerequisite |
A course that needs to be completed before taking another one. The prerequisite offers foundational information required to continue to the next course. |
Ram ID number |
This is your official college identification number at ASU. You are required to know this number and include it in your communications to Advising. Look yours up here: https://apps.asurams.edu/dev_code/lookup/index.php |
Syllabus |
A syllabus is a guide that provides details about a certain course. It usually includes deadlines, policies, expectations and how the grade for the class is calculated. |
Transcripts |
There are two types of transcripts: Unofficial and Official. Unofficial transcripts can easily be viewed, downloaded and printed through your MyASU Portal, while official transcripts need to be ordered through the Office of the Registrar. Academic advising cannot issue transcripts (unofficial or official). |
Withdraw |
After add/drop, you may withdraw from a class. A withdrawal does not change your hours and you are still responsible financially for the course. You will receive a “W” for the course grade if completed prior to the withdrawal deadline. |
