Timely Warnings and Emergency Notifications

Both Timely Warnings and Emergency Notifications are essential for keeping the campus community informed and safe during emergencies. By promptly communicating threats and providing guidance on how to respond, Albany State University Police Department can help individuals take appropriate action to protect themselves and others. Effective communication and coordination are key to ensuring a swift and coordinated response to emergencies and mitigating the impact on campus safety.

  • Timely Warnings: the Albany State University Police department will issue Timely Warnings, as soon as the pertinent information is available, for any Clery Act crimes that the University determines represent an ongoing threat to the safety of students, employees or the University Community.
  • Emergency Notifications: the Albany State University Police department will, without delay, and considering the safety of the community, issue an Emergency Notification upon the confirmation of a significant emergency or dangerous situation involving an immediate threat to the health or safety of students, employees or University Community.

Albany State University has implemented a multi-layered approach to providing important information to the campus community. Our emergency notification systems are designed to reach Albany State University students, faculty, and staff in a variety of ways with immediate emergency messaging.

  • The LiveSafe App enables administrators to send mass notifications and emergency alerts to users, keeping them informed about safety threats, campus closures, or other critical information. These notifications can be customized based on location, user groups, and specific incidents.
  • The Audible Siren System is manually activated by ASU PD personnel in the event of an emergency. The system uses warning sirens, chimes, and audible messages.
  • The Albany State University webpage and social media pages may also be utilized to provide emergency information to the Albany State University campus community.

Timely Warning Procedures:

The Clery Act requires universities and colleges to alert the campus community to certain crimes in a manner that is timely and will aid in the prevention of similar crimes. These alerts serve as critical tools for promoting campus safety, preventing crime, and empowering individuals to take proactive steps to protect themselves and others from harm. 

In the event that

  • A Clery Crime is reported
  • Within the Clery Geography of Albany State University
  • That, in the judgment of the Albany State University Chief of Police or his/her designee, constitutes a serious or ongoing threat to the campus community, 

Then, a campus-wide Timely Warning will be issued by the communications officer on duty, as soon as correct and pertinent information is available. Timely Warnings are meant to reach the entire campus community and are sent via the Livesafe App.

Timely warnings are typically issued for Clery Crimes that represent a serious or ongoing threat to the campus community. By alerting the campus community to specific crimes or safety threats, institutions aim to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. Timely warnings provide individuals with awareness of potential risks and encourage them to take proactive measures to avoid dangerous situations and protect themselves and others.

Emergency Notification Procedures:

The Clery Act requires universities and colleges to issue emergency notifications to the campus community in the event of a significant emergency or dangerous situation that poses an immediate threat to the health or safety of students, faculty, and staff on campus.

In the event a situation arises, that, in the judgment of the Albany State University Chief of Police or his/her designee, constitutes a significant emergency or dangerous situation, a campus-wide Emergency Notification will be issued. Emergency Notifications are meant to reach the entire campus community but may be segmented, if appropriate. This notification is sent by the communications officer on duty. The methods of communication used include the LiveSafe App and the university email system. Albany State University will also post updates during a critical incident on their homepage.

01/29/2025: A chemical Spill was reported at Village South Residential Dorm on West Campus. If you are in the location, go to a safe area away from the spill. 01/09/2024: This is ASU PD with an Emergency Alert Message. A TORNADO WARNING has been issued for West Central Dougherty County. Seek shelter immediately in the interior of the building. Stay away from windows and glass doors. Do not use the elevator. If you hear the tornado, crouch down and cover your head. Remain sheltered until you receive an All Clear message.
02/19/2025: This is ASU PD with an Emergency Alert Message. There have been reports of shots fired near campus on Sands Drive. Stay in your Dorm until we get issue an All Clear message.

03/06/2024: This is ASU PD with an Emergency Alert Message. There have been reports of shots fired near campus on Sands Drive. Please make your way inside and remain in place until you receive an "All Clear" Message from Albany State University Police Department.
03/06/2024: This is ASU PD with an Emergency Alert Message. There have been reports of shooting near East campus at Sand Trap night club. Please make your way inside and remain in place until you receive an "All Clear" Message from Albany State University Police Department.
03/09/2024:  This is ASU PD with an Emergency Alert Message.There is a power outage on West Campus. Facilities is aware of the problem and working to fix the issue. Do not use the elevators. Updates will be issued as made available.
03/11/2024: This is ASU PD with an Emergency Alert Message. Please stay clear of the East Campus Walking Trail. There is currently water overflowing from the river on the lower end of the trail.
03/11/2024: This is ASU PD with an Emergency Alert Message. Please stay clear of the Gazebo area due to rising water.
03/20/2024: This is ASU PD with an Emergency Alert Message. Be Advised. Albany 911 is conducting testing on the sirens and alarms near West Campus. It is only a test!

04/09/2024: This is NOT a test. Report of gunshots fired near campus. Seek shelter. For safety, lock doors and remain inside.
04/29/2024: ASU Rams Alert - This is an urgent emergency alert from Albany State University! A dangerous person possibly armed with a weapon was reported near West Campus dorms, Village South and West Commons.
If you are near the reported location, immediately lock and barricade yourself and others in a room if possible. If locking yourself in is not possible, leave and stay away from this location and move to a safe area immediately. Police are responding to the reported location of the shooter. Turn off lights and keep quiet. Remain calm. Wait for further instruction from the Police Department or recognized authority. The suspect is a (or has) AR-15. For more information, check the university website at www.asurams.edu If safe to do so, contact the University Police if you can provide specific information about the suspect or require medical assistance. More information will be provided.

04/29/2024: This is NOT a test. An emergency lock-down has been declared on West Campus due to a possible Active Scooter. Students, faculty, and staff should remain in their present location and wait for further instruction. 08/29/2024: ASU Rams Alert - A fire has been reported in Village South. If you are in the Village South, evacuate the building by using the stairwells and move to your established assembly area. Do not use the elevators and impede the Fire Department's response. For more information, check the university website at www.asurams.edu.

12/13/2024: Albany State University’s Office of Emergency Management requests your assistance as we execute scheduled fire drills across the East and West campuses today. The drills will be held at 9:30 a.m. on the West campus and 10 a.m. on the East campus as part of ongoing campus safety efforts.
