Chair's Message

Portrait of Dan Land, ChairpersonWelcome to the Department of Health and Human Performance (HHP) we really appreciate your interest in our program. We are in the midst of a very exciting time at the New Albany State University!  Presently we are one of the largest departments on campus under Darton’s College of Health Professions and look forward to expanding our classrooms and laboratories. The faculty work closely with students and provide opportunities to study exercise science while gaining hands-on experiences in all of our disciplines.

In pursuit of our vision of a healthy community, the Department of Health and Human Performance (HHP) prepares quality graduates to be competent entry-level professionals in Health and Human Performance related occupations or candidates for advanced study in related disciplines.

Our stellar faculty and administrators are engaged in a collaborative effort to recruit, retain, educate, and graduate Exercise Science professionals who contribute to the well-being of Southwest Georgia and beyond. The Exercise and Sports Science concentration is designed to provide students with the academic preparation and practical experience to serve in variety of possible careers such as exercise physiologist, strength and conditioning specialist, aerobics instructor, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation specialist, corporate wellness personnel and directors, personal training and more.

The specialized coursework is concentrated in the areas of exercise physiology, kinesiology, fitness assessment and interpretation, exercise prescription for the special populations, and organization and administration. Successful graduates of this track should possess the knowledge and skills to qualify for the American College of Sports Medicine Certified Exercise Physiologist certification (ACSM-EP-C) and/or National Strength and Conditioning Association Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS).

The Exercise and Sport Science concentration also serves as a strong foundation for those students interested in pursuing graduate study in exercise physiology, athletic training, physical therapy, occupational therapy, chiropractic medicine and physician assistant.

The ultimate goal of our department is to enhance the quality of life for all through our teaching, research, service, and professional growth of our students. Please take time to navigate our website or visit the HPER building at Albany State University. We welcome our alumni, friends, former faculty, and future students to come to campus and visit!
