HBCU-UP Program

(includes Overview & STEM Support Program)

HBCU-UP Overview

Albany State University (ASU) is strengthening its commitment to STEM education through the successful launch of the HBCU Undergraduate Program (HBCU-UP) Fall STEM Academy, a key component of the National Science Foundation (NSF) grant awarded to the university to increase recruitment, retention, and on-time graduation of underrepresented students in STEM fields.

STEM Support Program

HBCU‑UP provides more than $1,000 in support to incoming ASU freshmen majoring in STEM who participate in our program beginning their first year. Students receive a $500 stipend at the end of both the Fall and Spring semesters, along with a TI‑84 graphing calculator to support their academic success.

Come join our Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Psychology faculty members!

The Sustained System for Student Support will jump start your college STEM studies and give you a firm foundation. You will join others like you – incoming students in Biology, Computer Science, Engineering, Forensic Science, and Psychology – to:

  • Hone your critical thinking skills
  • Fine tune your study skills
  • Develop your math skills
  • Have fun with science-related field trips
  • Learn how research works
  • Improve your writing skills
  • Orient yourself to the campus community
  • Get a head start on your college career!

Guidance

Your group will stay together throughout your time at Albany State University, supported by dedicated faculty and student mentors. As a cohort, you will take specially designed mathematics and science courses that strengthen your academic foundation and build a strong sense of community. This learning community model helps you adjust to college life, stay engaged, and succeed in your STEM studies. After your first year, you will also have the opportunity to mentor the next group of students, continuing the cycle of support and leadership.

Success

This is not just about you, and it’s not just about Albany State. The nation needs more under-represented minority professionals in science, technology, math and engineering. Our four year project at ASU is designed to help, and we want you to be part of the solution!
