License Plate Recognition (LPR) is an advanced parking technology that provides virtual permits through a vehicle's license plate, eliminating the need for paper permits, sticker permits, or hangtags. LPR increases parking efficiency on campus, provides convenience for parking customers, and significantly reduces the amount of paper and plastic waste produced.
Individuals will register their vehicle plate information in the online parking system for their virtual permit. The LPR software then combines this information with the individual's Albany State University status and generates a virtual permit linked to that vehicle's license plate number.

When a vehicle parks on campus, the license plate is captured by the cameras mounted on the enforcement vehicles. LPR works similarly to a supermarket scanner, with your license plate functioning as the barcode. When read, the numbers on your plate are automatically referenced against the parking database to verify a valid permit and the proper parking privileges for the parking space location. If the license plate is not associated with a valid virtual permit or the vehicle is parked in an inappropriate lot, then the vehicle will be subject to a ticket and/or towed.
  • Eliminates the need to display a physical permit.
  • Eliminates having to return to your vehicle to display a paper permit.
  • Lost or stolen permits and the associated replacement fee.

Yes. Permits are valid for one academic year, August 1 to July 31. Parking Permits must be purchased prior to the fall semester each year.

There is no need to purchase an additional permit. Each individual may now register up to two vehicles at a time for no additional cost.

LPR has the ability to recognize a new vehicle without state-issued license plates. If you have a new vehicle with a temporary paper license plate, please type in the 8 temporary digits of the temporary paper license plate when registering your vehicle online. Once your DMV-issued license plates have arrived, you will be required to immediately update your information in the Vehicle Registration. Failure to add the new vehicle license plate information may result in a ticket.
If you have a personalized plate with fewer than 7 characters, or if you have a special character within your plate (heart, star, etc.), please skip the special character on the plate.
