2017 Summer Camp Offerings

Camp Name: Summer Learning Academy

Learning Academy PhotoThe Summer Learning Academy is a STEM-based summer enrichment program teaching advanced concepts in math and science for ages 7-11. The week-long summer program will introduce kids to careers in space technology by featuring robotics, planetary science and space exploration. The program will culminate with a fun Friday field trip on June 30.

The curriculum is based on the Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE) and is taught by certified teachers. Join us to explore math and science through fun, interactive, and engaging ways. STEM summer learning will move students to the head of the class!

Camp Name: National Summer Transportation Institute

The National Summer Transportation Institute is designed to create awareness and stimulate interest in opportunities that exist in the transportation industry. The curriculum includes highway design, transportation of people and cargo, intermodalism, laws, regulations, safety and career opportunities. In addition, students will participate in computer training, academic enhancement activities, field trips and student projects.

Dates: June 1-30, 2017

Location: Albany State University, 504 College Drive, Hartnett Hall (Criminal Justice Building), Room 104

Participants: The program is available to rising 9th-12th graders in good standing.

Camp Name: HBCU-UP Summer Program

The HBCU-UP Summer Program for newly admitted freshmen students declared STEM majors is a sustained system for student support to jump start college STEM studies and establish a firm foundation before the first day of class.

Camp Name: Technology Oriented Workshop for High School Teachers

STEM education improvement plan one day workshop for math and science high school teachers. The workshop topics include: the effectiveness of student presentations, common strategies to engage students in mathematics learning, sharing experiences and technology on mathematics teaching, teaching and research opportunities in STEM disciplines and Open-Source 'R' for statistical computing and visualization

Camp Name: BYE (Black Youth in Entrepreneurship) Workshop

The BYE Workshop targets Southwest Georgia area high school students who are interested in small business ownership and management. Personal development and career planning will also be discussed. The workshop will provide role models, cultural and recreational activities, microcomputer exercises, classroom sessions and a minority-owned business fieldtrip.

Dates: June 5-8, 2017, Monday through Thursday.

Participants: BYE is an in-residence, four days and three nights, program at Albany State University. Students must be enrolled in one of ASU’s 24-county service area schools, less than 18 years old and entering 9-12 grade beginning September 2017. Students are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. First-year students are given priority.

Location: Albany State University, 504 College Drive

Cost: All meals are included for camp participants. There is a $50 application fee.

Applications will be available beginning May 1, 2017 and will be sent to school counselors at surrounding high schools.

Camp Name: Albany State University Academy for Future Teachers

The Academy for Future Teachers is an intensive summer program designed for students considering a career in science and/or math education. Students collaborate with teachers and other university personnel to develop lessons and assessments based on their exposure to science, technology, engineering, and math content. Students have the opportunity to teach at least one lesson to real students and to explore learning during various field experiences that supplement classroom instruction. In addition to math and science learning opportunities, students also receive SAT/ACT test preparation and writing support.

Dates/Time: June 12 – June 30, 2017. 8:30 a.m. – Noon

Camp Name: Pre-K Readiness Summer Program

The ASU Early Learning Center’s Pre-K Readiness Summer Program is designed to serve 20 eligible children and prepare them for entry into the Pre-K Program for the upcoming school year.

Albany State University Sports Camps provide opportunities for athletes of all ages to develop their skills in a fun, sportsmanlike environment. In addition to fundamental instruction, campers will be exposed to sport specific strategies and will have the chance to meet new people. Our goal as a Department is to offer sports camps that challenge athletes and promote individual improvement that will eventually lead to athletic success.

ASU NYSP 2017 SUMMER SPORTS AND ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

Albany State University and the City of Albany, Georgia

The National Youth Sports Program (NYSP) combines sports instruction with educational programs. Students engage in activities that promote physical fitness, character development, civic responsibility and college readiness. Professionals will lead sessions on such topics as prevention of alcohol and drug abuse, nutrition and health, academic excellence, college and career visioning, and reading/writing instruction. NYSP participants also receive a NYSP T-shirt, a daily USDA-approved meal, a free medical exam, and interaction with college students and professional staff. Youth will practice standard sports and learn new ones! Activities may include swimming, basketball, softball, tennis, volleyball, and dance/aerobics.

Camp Name: Scot Hemmings Baseball Camp

Come enjoy a full week of baseball with Scot Hemmings at Albany State University (formerly the Darton State Baseball camp) for the 6th annual “Summer Baseball Camp.” Your son/daughter will have the opportunity to spend an entire week with a very qualified camp staff.

Camps Dates: June 12th through June 16th and June 19th through June 23rd

Location: Albany State University-West Campus on Gillionville Road

Time: 9:00AM until 1PM Cost: $100.00 or

Time: 9 AM until 5PM Cost: $150.00 (Extended Camp)

  1. You son/daughter will need to arrive at the baseball field no later than 8:45 each morning and picked up no later than 1:15 PM each afternoon, unless they are participating in the extended camp, which runs until 5:00PM.
  2. You will drop off and pick-up your child at the batting cage located in the right field corner of the baseball field.
  3. Your child will need to bring a glove, hat, cleats or tennis shoes, bat, and sunscreen. They will need a bathing suit and towel for slip-n-slide Friday.
  4. Please let us know if your child could possibly have an allergic reaction to food, ant bite, mosquito bite, etc.
  5. Campers can either pack their lunch or purchase pizza from the concession stand.

Camp Name: Amber Miles Youth Softball Camp

Come join our five-day instructional softball camp and learn the fundamentals of hitting, throwing, fielding, catching and individual position play. The camp will feature Albany State Softball Head Coach Amber Miles and coaching staff, as well as, current and former Albany State University softball players. This is a chance to get great instruction and have fun learning the game. Campers need to bring shoes, gloves, and a winning attitude. We will also offer an “Extended Day” option so campers can stay and spend the afternoon playing games, swimming, snacks, and more! Extended Day campers will be responsible for bringing their own lunch.
